8. Tin Stitch - From Traditional Ethnic Miao Embroidery
The Tin Stitch technique is a special method that involves the application of tin in embroidery instead of silk.
Tin is applied to several fixed patterns or figures, and the skills utilized for tin embroidery are much more complicated than those for silk embroidery. This technique is found only in Miao communities in Jianhe County.
The actual process is as follows:
Step 1: Thin tin plates are cut into slices 2 mm wide, with the ends shaped like a spearhead and then turned into hooks.
Step 2: Silk threads, usually in black or dark colors, are made into many loops according to the pattern.
Step 3: Tin hooks connect the loops; they are rolled, cut, and then pressed flat to form many tin dots, creating the overall pattern.
Tin embroidery emphasizes the symmetry of the pattern, the delicacy of the tin dots, and the orderly arrangement of the tin dot lines.
